Rise of Scam Amazon Marketplace Sellers

Over the last month we noticed a rise in Amazon Marketplace sellers created for one purpose only - to scam people. All of them list a lot of products, have great prices, but as the orders start rolling it customers quickly realize that their products are not coming. For example Redline Street Performance this week started getting a lot of traffic and it only took us a moment to realize it's one of the offending sellers. They already have 420 negative reviews at the time of writing, and of course by now Amazon has suspended their selling, but that's at least 400 upset customers.

Walmart on Thursday reported Q2 2016 earnings beating market expectations. Ecommerce sales (gross merchandise volume) grew by 13%, well above the last three quarters' growth rate. Walmart was struggling to grow their ecommerce sales - in Q1 2016 ecommerce sales grew by only 7%.

Today Walmart made the biggest move yet in a bid to compete with Amazon by acquiring Jet.com. Jet.com has been online for a little over a year since July 2015. Jet.com founding team included Marc Lore, who had previously founded Quidsi, the umbrella company for Daipers.com, Soap.com and BeautyBar.com, and then sold the company to Amazon for $545 million in 2010.

Since 2009 when the marketplace launched until 2016 May only 500 sellers were approved to sell. Then in three months that number has grown to 1,000 sellers. And now in just a month it has doubled to 2,000. At this pace we expect Walmart to be adding at least 1,000 new sellers every month.

Fastest Growing Amazon.com Sellers July 2016 Report

July had the biggest day in Amazon's history - 2016 Prime Day. Amazon reported that 49% of all sales were handled by marketplace sellers in 2016 Q2. Down the list you will also find AnkerDirect, one of the TOP 10 Amazon sellers. Surprisingly they were able to grow over 30% in July, which is rare for a seller of their size. We are guessing Prime Day was a big factor for this.

After trading closed today Amazon announced second quarter results. Amazon beat expectations on both top and bottom line. We were very happy to read that marketplace sellers continue to do very well. 49% of all sales on Amazon were done by marketplace sellers. We can only expect that number to finally reach 50% by the end of the year.

eBay's Q2 2016 Sees $19.8 Billion in Marketplace Sales, Passes 1 Billion Live Listings

eBay reported its Q2 2016 earnings today. Marketplaces delivered $19.8 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV), up by 5%, and $1.8 billion of revenue, up by 3%. eBay higlighted the fact that eBay.com and other marketplaces have over 1 billion live listings for the first time. In Q1 there was 900 million active listings, so the products' catalog has grown by 11% in just three months. Given how the big the catalog was to start with, that's a very impressive growth rate.
